Cyber Monday Savings! It Sounds Like The Mets Have A Limited Budget Heading Into Free Agency Yet Again!
I know I usually give the Mets and in particular the Wilpons a lot of shit on this here blog for being cheap fucks. But this story coming out from a friend of the franchise like Jon Heyman while the entire country's inboxes are being flooded with deals pure genius because nothing is more relatable than trying to save a buck on Cyber Monday. Sure the Wilpons are baseball owners worth hundreds of millions of dollars that are still crying poor for falling for a Ponzi scheme that they recouped a good chunk of their money from while millions of people in the Tri-State Area shlepped through a winter storm along with the dread and shame that come with the Monday After Thanksgiving in order to get to work this morning.
But why let facts get in the way of trying to find a good deal by trying to find a big bat in what will essentially be the discount DVD section of the Hot Stove's gas station? I get that the Pittsburghs and Detroits of the world are more than fine doing all their Christmas shopping and eating Christmas dinner at a Wawa. And if that's the standard of life the size of your market gives you, you have to hope your team is smart like the Tampa Bays of the world as you rebuild through smart signings and the draft.
However the Mets have a big market zip code, share a city with a team looking at the biggest fish in the free agency pond, didn't have to spend real money on their rotation for years (and even now are only spending it on the best pitcher in the NL), have the Rookie of the Year as well as a future batting champion both making peanuts for years, reportedly pocketed the insurance payments for Yo like they did David Wright, and traded the previous year's number 1 pick along with other prospects for a closer, a now 37-year-old 2nd baseman making $24 million, and a pitcher that looked like a Number 3 at best in Queens because they believe the team is close enough to competing now. And if you are that serious about competing while the window is open and those young guys are affordable, you go all in on a big name while you can.
Orrrrrrr you say you are not going to rule any big free agent out when you meet with the media after hiring a new manager even though you don't have any real plan to sign them unless they are willing to play for free.
Then you have a reporter casually mention budget concerns right before the offseason kicks off, which will no doubt lead to the Mets having a couple of "good conversations" about those free agents you never met with that will end up signing for deals the Scrooge ass Wilpons wouldn't have been within $100 million of matching, which will lead to me tweeting this video again from now until the end of my life since the Wilpons are never going to let the Mets go and keep multiplying new heirs to half measure their way into not being awful but not being perennial contenders like all the other big market teams that act like big market teams.
Time is a flat circle for Mets fans and I want to cut myself with that flat circle when I think about this team and its owners.
Anyway, speaking of Cyber Monday, did you know that the entire Barstool Store is 20% off with free shipping on orders of $75+?
Ryan knows what's up and picked the perfect shirt for a day like today!
